Capability and cost reference

Casey Hospital: 1.74 MWp over the car park

Casey is an outer-metro campus in a growth corridor with a large at-grade car park and room to expand. We drew and priced a canopy over that parking so Monash Health has a checked figure to work from, at a level that can be carried into a capital submission or written into a future works package.

Hospital load and canopy generation line up unusually well. An acute campus runs a high, flat base load through daylight hours every day of the year, and its car parks are full for the same hours. The generation is consumed on site behind the meter rather than exported.

What the canopy does for the site

The roof is not the constraint

Hospital roofs are contested, heavily serviced and often not available. A canopy is a new structure sized to the lot, which brings the site's largest flat surface into scope.

Shade for staff, patients and visitors

Covered parking is one of the few sustainability investments that a patient or a nurse on night shift actually experiences.

Built for a working campus

Around 80% of each canopy is built in our factory and craned in, which keeps trades and hot works away from a live hospital. Installs can be staged where sections of the lot must stay open.

Measurable against net zero

Generation is metered behind the meter, so the reduction is auditable and reports in the same line each year.

Why this campus

Monash Health operates under Victorian public health net zero commitments, and Casey is one of the network's growth campuses, which means the car park is likely to be re-planned at some point regardless. The cheapest time to put a canopy over a lot is when the lot is already on the table.

The canopy drawn below delivers 1.74 MWp, about 2.18 GWh a year on site, for $3.13M of base scope. Every figure comes from a scaled layout on the actual car park and our pricing engine, so it can be tested rather than taken on faith.

Drawn and priced

The canopy below was drawn to scale on the actual car park and priced through our engine. Figures are preliminary, ex-GST, subject to site assessment: 1.74 MWp, about 2.17 GWh a year generated on site, for $3.13M of base scope.

Proven on live campuses

Canyon Solar factory-builds solar canopies that turn large car parks into onsite generation and shade. We have delivered them for Woolworths, across six sites, and for IGA, AstraZeneca and CSIRO. The AstraZeneca canopy went up on an active pharmaceutical campus and the client confirmed it was three times faster than in-situ construction, with 75% fewer high-risk on-site labour hours. That is the closest comparison we have to building around a working hospital.

The Grand Canyon

For a lot this size the standout design is the Grand Canyon: a continuous, full-coverage canopy with no gaps over the driving lanes. It gives the highest solar density in our range and a clean roofline that reads as a designed part of the site. Installs can be staged where sections of the car park must stay open.

Any site, in minutes

This site took minutes to draw. We can do the same for any other campus in the network, live: draw the canopy to scale on the car park, size it, and price it while you watch. We can also run the economics on your own inputs, whatever tariff, self-consumption or funding structure applies, so the figures sit inside your own business case format.

How to proceed

A specified option in the next package

The figures here are at a level you can carry into a capital submission or write into the scope of a future car park or campus works package.

A cost reference to test

Run our layout and pricing against your own assumptions before anything goes to market, so the number in your business case is one you have checked.

Every canopy is engineered, factory-built and installed by the team that has delivered 16 projects across three states.

We are not asking for a procurement decision. If it is useful, we will validate the layout on the actual title boundary and run the economics on Monash Health's own consumption and tariff data, so that whatever goes to market later is specified from a checked number.
